WatermeLon Driving School FAQs

Q: Why is it important to pass my test on the first attempt?

A: Driving Tests are difficult and expensive to find, so you will want to pass on your first attempt with us! We will help you do that - all you have to do is follow the advice and instruction from your driving instructor and pass 3 full mock tests well before your booked driving test... and we will help you do that too!

Q: What will happen in my lessons?

A: You will receive a unique blend of instruction, coaching and training techniques. We wil help you get to at least the standard required to pass your test. You will either be driving, receive a short demonstration, or have a discussion on the side of the road - we will help and guide you through each driving subject, topic and skills area until you have mastered it for yourself!

Q: Why do I need a good instructor?

A: To give you value for money, your lessons will be where you will either make progress towards your driving goal, gain valuable experience, or develop your knowledge and understanding. We will avoid you wasting your time (and money) which can happen if you endlessly repeat mistakes without correction and the correct level of support.

Q: I've heard that you learn to pass the test, and then learn to drive afterwards?

A: Passing the test is the first step to becoming a good and safe driver. We will always encourage you to gain more experience and training so that you can be a really great driver like your instructor - either before or after your test!

Q: What if I'm not ready for my test?

A: When you have passed three mock tests, you should be ready for the real thing, so this is the standard we set - reducing test nerves along the way! We'll only encourage you to go for your test when you are ready (and safe) to do so!

Q: How many lessons will I need?

A: Everyone learns at their own pace, we will encourage you to learn quickly! You will need fewer lessons because of our learning techniques.

Q: I'm not sure who to go with, do I have to commit straight away?

A: Absolutely not! Book a lesson with us, meet your instructor; and let us know what you want to do next!

Q: Do I need to book my driving test first?

A: No, but we will encourage you to pass your theory test and book a driving test as soon as possible.

Q: Do I need to pay extra to book my DVSA driving test using a test cancellation service or app?

A: No, it's possible for you to find a cancellation and many pupils do it for themselves. However, if you use an additional service or app they will charge you extra for the service; which should be a reasonable amount (and no more!). Unfortunately, we do not have time to find you a driving test.

Q: Do I need a provisional licence?

A: Yes, you need to obtain your provisional licence from the DVLA and it should be valid with your current address and not expired. For refresher lessons you need a valid full licence from the UK. From another country we require a provisional UK licence even within 12 months of UK residency.

Q: Which Test Centres do you use or recommend?

A: We use a number of Test Centres within Hertfordshire and sometimes beyond. We specialise in Watford and St Albans Driving Test Centres but will support you in your chosen test centre and have taken pupils successfully to test at other test centres.

Q: Are national driving schools better?

A: No! All driving instructors are self-employed. Some pupils prefer to use a national school for reassurance about quality of service but check out their reviews so that you get the full picture. We have clear terms and conditions to give you peace of mind and a lesson promise if your not happy with a lesson. If you wish to use a National we recommend Support Driving School.

Q: I have a foreign driving licence, can you help?

A: Yes! You will either have 12 months to take the UK test, or will need to convert your existing licence within 12 months if you are permanently resident in the UK. We can help with all foreign driving licence conversions and upskilling so that you have the correct knowledge, understanding and licence status to be driving in the UK.

Q: I've wanted to drive for a long time but suffer from anxiety. Can you help?

A: You're not alone, so don't give up hope; we can help you. We can help you to overcome driving anxiety issues during the driving lessons so that you can start learning to drive. The lessons  are always adapted to help each pupil learn regardless of your own starting point.

Q: I'm an experienced driver but not confident on motorways, parallel parking, reversing, and night driving, etc...

A: Your previous driving lessons probably never included these elements in depth, so that's why! We can help you and other full licence holders gain that confidence in your area of concern, and you'll be a safer driver too after having lessons with us!

Q: Can I use my car for driving lesson with you...

A: Yes, some pupils find that it works better for them if they have lessons in the car that they are using for private practice in their own time. We'll have to make a few checks to ensure that everything is covered correctly before the first lesson, so get in touch as soon as possible if you want to use your own car!
